George II Red Japanned Coffer or Chest
-
Description
This is a period George II/George III Chest or Coffer that retains its original red Japanned surface. The chest features a molded lid typically found in George II/ early George III coffers. The coffer is composed of two drawers over bracket feet with the trunk section positioned over the drawers. The raised japanning depicts a village scene to the front of the chest and a more refined scene to the top panel. The Japanning has been conservatively refreshed by a master art restorer. The left front bracket foot retained its original blocking: we have restored the outer bottom third of the bracket foot. All other elements of the coffer appear to be original. The red japanning would add character to any room.
