Two-Seater "Namoradeira" by Zanine Caldas, Brazil, 1975
-
Description
"Namoradeira" double rocker by José Zanine Caldas, a remarkable two-seater chair, meticulously crafted from a single, massive piece of reclaimed Pequi wood. Designed circa 1975 and produced by Atelier Zanine in Nova Viçosa, Bahia, Brazil, this loveseat features two seats positioned to face each other, connected by a unique wooden "belt" and armrests on each end. The contrasting tones and directional cuts of the wood create a visually captivating effect, enhancing the piece's dimensionality and appeal. Entirely hand-carved, the Namoradeira showcases the artisan's dedication to traditional methods, eschewing electric machinery in favor of manual techniques.
Discovered in Nova Viçosa and transported to São Paulo, the loveseat underwent a meticulous restoration process. Initially, it was cleaned with sodium hydroxide and deeply brushed, followed by a de-bug treatment. The restoration included careful reapplication of assembly grout, light hand sanding, and the application of five thin layers of transparent, matte varnish, each polished between applications to preserve the original craftsmanship and materials.
