Custom James Martin Nightstand or End Table American Black Walnut & Cleft Slate
-
Description
Pennsylvania has produced some of the finest craftsmen and women to grace the mid-century modern movement, such as Paul Evans, George and Mira Nakashima, Phillip Lloyd Powell, Jack Rogers Hopkins and many others. But one of the less known artists from the state is James Martin. Working with American black walnut and cleft slate, Martin crafted a beautiful nightstand. Made with passion, this custom piece features an exterior of awesome grained walnut which features solid walnut dowels throughout for structure and meticulous joinery at every edge. Each piece of wood used was carefully selected, and each seems to have its own character. The main body is topped with a sheet of natural cleft slate, and is set on a base not seen in any other examples. This nightstand, which can also be used as an end table, makes for a perfect addition to your classic mid-century home.
I got these piece directly from the artist's estate after he unfortunately passed in 2020. While this body is most commonly seen as a planter, he decided to add the slate top and base to make it his perfect nightstand. It's been in my personal collection since then, and has gone unused.
The piece is in great vintage condition. There has been no warping in any of the solid wood, and has only experienced light general wear. Please see our high-resolution photos and see for yourself. -
