Artist Bio: Charlie Edmiston
Charlie Edmiston is a dynamic abstract artist based in Los Angeles, California, whose creative journey began in the streets as a graffiti artist. This foundation in street art instilled in him a rebellious spirit and a risk-taking sensibility that informs his vibrant and large-scale works today. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design, Edmiston comes from a family of artists; his father was a calligrapher, and his grandmother a cartoonist, which nurtured his artistic inclinations from an early age.
Edmiston's artistic evolution is marked by a significant transition during his time at Otis, where he shifted from photo-realistic oil portraits to bold hard-edge abstractions. Influenced by his mentor Scott Grieger, Edmiston embraced the freedom of abstraction, exploring the interplay of color and form. His work celebrates a diverse range of styles and mediums, including colorful hard-edge paintings, large-scale murals, and mixed media compositions that feature geometric shapes and letters.
The artist's daily practices are essential to his creative flow; organization and a curated music playlist fuel his productivity. Edmiston often listens to a mix by Belgian producer “The Magician” while working, alongside eclectic influences like the 70s African psych-rock band "Witch."
Edmiston has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, showcasing at prestigious venues such as Scope Miami, the Urban Art Fair in France, and the Avenue des Arts Gallery in California. His recent participation in an artist residency at Hotel El Ganzo in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, has further expanded his artistic repertoire. Edmiston continues to experiment with new materials and dimensions in his work, merging the worlds of 2D and 3D art.
Currently, Edmiston resides in Los Angeles, where he remains committed to pushing the boundaries of his artistic expression, always inspired by the vibrant surroundings and diverse cultural landscape of the city.
