Artist Bio: Scott Andresen
Scott Andresen is an artist based in New Orleans, Louisiana, whose innovative collage and mixed media works delve into themes of repair and the beauty of unlikely combinations. With an MFA from Yale University and a BA from Hunter College, Andresen has established a significant presence in the art world, exhibiting in over 50 group and solo shows at notable venues including Lehmann Maupin Gallery, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and The Bronx Museum.
Andresen's artistic journey took a transformative turn following a serious accident over a decade ago. This pivotal experience shaped his exploration of repair—not only in his art but also in his own life. His work embodies the processes of construction, destruction, and reparation, reflecting the complexities of recovery and resilience.
His artistic practice consists of two interconnected bodies of work. The first series draws inspiration from the Japanese art of kintsugi, where broken ceramics are mended with gold and silver, enhancing their beauty and value. Andresen collects discarded sandpaper from his home restoration projects, organizing these seemingly insignificant materials into quilt-like grids. Each tear is lovingly repaired with metallic leaf, elevating the mundane to something worthy of contemplation.
The second body of work is influenced by textile mending techniques from around the world. Here, Andresen focuses on delicate silk scrim, which he uses to create veils that appear caught in motion. These pieces celebrate the fragility of life, with their damages stitched back together, emphasizing the object's history. The scars become badges of honor, reflecting the emotional connections we form with our belongings.
Andresen's work is part of esteemed collections, including the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Museum of Arts & Design in New York City. He has attended prestigious residencies at Black Rock Senegal, Socrates Sculpture Park, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor at the LSU School of Art, where he oversees the Foundations program, inspiring the next generation of artists with his insights on repair and transformation.
