Léon Bakst (1866-1924) Dancer with Scarf, watercolor on paper, 1910

$ 36,846
  • Description
    Dimensions : 39 x 61,5 cm à vue (cadre : 54 x 76 x 2 cm)

    Aquarelle on paper depicting a dancer with a long, flared skirt adorned with botanical patterns, an asymmetrical top revealing the midriff, and accessories embellished with floral and geometric motifs. This work illustrates Léon Bakst's avant-garde influence and mystical elegance.

    A Russian painter and decorator, Bakst revolutionized scenography in the early 20th century with his creations for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, such as "Shéhérazade" and "L'Après-midi d'un faune". By the 1910s, Bakst's style had taken hold in Paris, London, Monte Carlo, and New York. As Jean Cocteau wrote: “The triumph of Léon Bakst swept away our stages and replaced the gray dust with a new dust, dust of gold and vivid colors.”

    His influence continues to be felt in the world of high fashion and continues to inspire creators such as Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, John Galliano for Dior, and Karl Lagerfeld for Chloé. For Bakst, fashion and Art walk hand in hand.

    The condition of the watercolor is good, though it has a few small holes, minor stains, and some restorations.
