Olive Grove 2010
-
Description
Olive trees and olive groves are often the main subject of Tzannes paintings.
An American painter of Greek origins, Tzannes visited the Greek island of Kythera in his twenties. Since that time, the island has become the major reference of his creativity. The choice of using black and white to represent this landscape gives the mighty hundred-years old olive trees a monumental presence. The viewer is drawn into the timeless, spiritual quality of the Greek landscape. Despite the absence of color, Tzannes' mastery of drawing creates a tangible effect of the Greek light that imbues everything. Tzannes outstanding drawing skills are even more evident in this work for which he used one of the most difficult printmaking techniques, the monotype. The image is draw on glass and then transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together. This produces a unique print, or monotype. Despite the absence of color, the variations of luminosity and brilliance throughout the image are impressive. At a close examination, the viewer will realize a surface covered by hundreds of tiny marks, like pointillism, the neo-impressionist technique developed by Georges Seurat. At a distance, the points become blended in the viewer's eye. This "plein-air" rural landscape, has also references in the work of pre-impressionist painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.
The artwork is sold framed. The unframed dimension is 7.75" x 19.5". -
