Homage to Heraclitus: Earth V - Black and White Landscape Photograph of a Cave

$ 4,900
  • Description
    John Stathatos "Homage to Heraclitus: Earth V" is a black - and white 50 x 40 inch photograph. It is printed on archival Hahnemuhle Barita paper. The photograph is part of a series (Three Heraclitean Elements), conceived around the speculations on the nature of the universe made by pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus, who believed the physical world to be composed of three elements: fire, water, and earth. The series consists of images made within the same few square miles of the Greek island of Kythira, arranged in three sequences corresponding to each of the elements.
    For the Earth, Stathatos took some close-up of caves. The theatrical lighting, created by the natural light entering the cave, shapes a suggestive "natural sculpture" of shadows and lights, intensified by the choice of a black and - white medium.

    This is print #1 of and edition of 7
    It is mounted on aluminum and laminated. Should the collector wish to acquire the artwork unmounted or with a different mount, we are available to discuss the various options available.

    John Stathatos was born in Greece. He lives and works between the Greek island of Kythira and London. He is best known for his photographic work, mostly in a black - and white format, exploring philosophical, as well as sociological, and literary themes through the portraiture of objects (A Visual Primer of the World, 2011), natural elements (Three Heraclean Elements, 1991), and places (Arboretum, 2006).
    Independent from the subject matter, Stathatos's photographic work is imbued by a pronounced solemnity that compels the viewer to pause and consider the underlying meaning.

    His principal photographic works include Homage to Melville, 1988; The Gardens of the Hesperides, 1993; Akea, 1994; The Book of Lost Cities, 1996; Lumen, 2004; Lithoi/Stones, 2006; Airs, Waters, Places, 2009; and Change, 2012.
