Jumbo Travertine Coffee Table by Gae Aulenti for Knoll, Italy, 1960s
-
Description
Travertine "Jumbo" coffee table, designed by Gae Aulenti for Knoll in the 1960s. Featuring a smooth, square travertine top supported by four robust column legs, this design consists of five separate parts that assemble into a cohesive, visually striking table. Its combination of clean, geometric lines and natural stone textures creates an organic yet structured aesthetic.
Gae Aulenti (1927–2012) was an influential Italian architect and designer, whose work spanned various disciplines, including furniture, lighting, and stage design. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano, Aulenti contributed significantly to the Italian Postwar design movement, with a focus on creating designs that resonated with both historical and contemporary Italian culture. She was a prominent figure in the Postmodern movement, rejecting the purely functionalist approach of modernism in favor of more expressive and symbolic forms. Among her notable architectural projects are the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and Palazzo Grassi in Venice. Her innovative and avant-garde designs continue to influence contemporary architecture and design. -
