Vitrales al Alba - Abstract Painting With Pastel Colors: Blue, Turquoise, Azul
-
Description
This painting, Vitrales al Alba (Stained Glass at Dawn) by Alfredo Aya, captures the ethereal quality of stained glass at dawn through its luminous palette of blues, aquas, and golden yellows. Aya’s composition radiates a serene balance, with vertical lines resembling the architectural grandeur of cathedral windows softened by abstract forms and gentle textures. Light dances across the canvas, evoking both a meditative calm and a sense of awakening—qualities reminiscent of the spiritual abstraction found in Marc Chagall’s stained glass works or the geometric precision of Sonia Delaunay’s color harmonies.
Aya’s mastery lies in his ability to blend abstraction with light, achieving an almost prismatic effect where color appears to glow from within the surface. Layers of paint build subtle variations in texture, a hallmark of his painterly technique, inviting the viewer to pause and immerse in the interplay of hues. The luminous blues and golds, symbolic of transcendence and renewal, bring a timeless quality to this contemporary work, making it a perfect statement piece for modern interiors seeking depth and sophistication. Aya’s art transforms the energy of light and shadow into an evocative composition, bridging the gap between expressionism and architectural elegance.
Alfredo Aya’s paintings navigate the delicate boundary between figuration and abstraction and have the delicacy and poetry of a landscape when perceived through the muting effect of a misty morning. Shapes rhythmically appear and disappear through large fields of primary colors, vivid yet subdued, informed by the tropical landscapes and Caribbean seashores of his beloved Colombia. He writes “For me the color is the music of the painting, the grays like the silence of the music unite the colors, which sometimes oppose each other to have more strength or complement each other forming a harmony.”
Aya was born in Paris, where he lived until his early twenties, beginning his painting career immersed in the artistic work of modern French masters.
After going back to Colombia, living mostly in San Andres Island and Cartagena, he honed his artistic approach. His most figurative paintings bear similarities to Post-Impressionist works by artists like Paul Gauguin, especially in the choice of colors and a synthetist style. In his most abstract paintings, Aya combines geometric and biomorphic shapes defined by soft pastel colors, reminiscent of the spatial composition of Chilean Surrealist painter Roberto Matta and the dreamy creations of French artist Émile Bernard. -
