Acquired directly from the artist.
Designed in his Conoid Studio, the sleek and
elegant Conoid bench features an asymmetric
design with long and rounded striations throughout.
George Nakashima honored the spirit of his
material by highlighting natural irregularities in the
wood slabs he worked with. Towards the end of
the bench is a delicate rosewood butterfly inlay.
This is an example of a conoid bench, a design first
introduced in 1960, and is a exquisite specimen
that perfectly echoes Nakashima’s artistic
philosophy of the maintenance of the beauty and
natural aura of a tree.
Sold together with the original preparatory drawing,
pencil signed and dated: “March 5 1968 George
