French 18th Century Louis XVI Trumeau Mirror
-
Description
A variety of textures enlivens this trumeau mirror from the 18th century. In the frieze, a gilded high-relief carving of auspicious foliate and vegetal representations is set off by crackled French Grey paint and red bole visible where some pigment has chipped away. The original mirror plate is divided into four quadrants by dense foxing that is painterly and abstract in effect. Molding around the mirror exhibits the same fine crackle as the painted surface.
