Description
Brigantine Adelaide
Probably New York, dated 1891
Crayon, colored pencil, and ink on paper, 14 ⅛ x 21 ⅞ inches, in a period painted frame
was executed in crayon, colored pencil, and ink by is one of about a dozen surviving drawings by the folk artist Parley Scott Downer (1823–1893). Downer’s ship drawings are supposedly autobiographical, relating “an old Sailor’s” adventures at sea with whimsy and charm. This drawing is from a middle-point in his artistic career which spanned the late 1880s to the early 1890s and employed an increasingly elaborate decorative program of symbols and flourishes. Examples of his work are represented in private and museum collections, including an example in the collection of Lucy and Mike Danziger sold to them in 1976 by Peggy Schorsch, - More Information
