of U-shaped form and in the neoclassical taste with conforming writing surface surrounded by a raised level fitted with slots and drawers all flanked by hinged doors on either end; raised on square tapering supports; adorned overall with fine neoclassical inlay depicting flowers, urns, scrollwork and ribbons.
A Carlton House desk is a specific antique desk designed in the 18th century for the Prince of Wales by George Hepplewhite. It is named after Carlton House, the London residence of the Prince. Drawings of this type of desk were presented by Hepplewhite in his noted design book, the Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, and by Thomas Sheraton in his own book of designs, The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, thus ensuring its popularity.
