    Beautiful, highly detailed original oil on canvas painting of a young maid stopping her work to read a book in the library room. The artist is the Belgian artist, Jean Daniel Stevens. Signed lower left by the artist. Condition is good. Old reline of canvas. Circa 1890. Original frame with numerous old repairs. Overall framed measurements are 37 by 29 inches. Provenance: A New York estate.

    Jean Daniel Steven’s was born in Belgium in 1850. The artist specialized in genre scenes. He lived in Brussels and participated in exhibitions in Amsterdam in 1883 and Brussels in 1893. Stevens was awarded a medal in London in 1874. He died in 1920.
