Description
Presented is an original “Pollards Ship Chandlery” sign, which dates to the mid 20th century. The hand-painted burgundy sign is constructed of wooden boards, joined by battens on the reverse, and completed with incurvate corners. The sign’s lettering reads “Pollards Ships Chandlery”in vibrant gold. The sign also gives examples of available goods found at the chandlery, including “Charts, Sextants, Globes, Anchors, Ropes, &c.” The lettering surrounds a large wooden sextant affixed to the center, also painted in gold.
A ship chandler is a specialized supplier who provides necessary provisions and equipment to individual seamen and vessels. The profession has a rich historical background, dating back to the age of sail when ships relied on local suppliers for fresh food, navigational tools, and other essentials.A good chandler knew the needs of his local economy and was a specialist in meeting those needs, be they whaling, shipping, fishing, or ship building. This allowed the ship's crew to focus on their primary duties without worrying about sourcing and procuring necessary items for their next voyage.
