Karl Hjalmar Idman (1872-1924) began his entrepreneurial journey in 1897 with a store that specialized in lamps, glass, porcelain, and restaurant supplies. In 1919, he moved to Helsinki, where he founded Hjalmar Idman Oy in 1920, focusing on crystal glass sales. After Hjalmar's passing in 1924, his wife, Astrid Idman, sold the shares to Ahlström but remained actively involved in the company. The name Hjalmar Idman Oy was kept, transitioning to Idman Oy in 1928. By the end of the decade, Idman Oy started producing its own lighting fixtures and even ventured into manufacturing incandescent light bulbs.
In 1953, Idman Oy acquired the majority of shares in Taito Oy, founded by Paavo Tynell, who continued to contribute to the company as a freelance designer. Today, Idman is renowned for its high-quality fixtures and iconic designs by Tynell, as well as notable female Finnish designers Mauri Almari and Gunnel Nyman. -
