Frank C. Penfold, an American artist, received his early art training from his father, William
Penfold, a portrait painter. In 1877, He went to France to study at the Académie Julian in Paris and later settled in Pont Aven, Brittany. By that time, Pont Aven had grown into a lively international artist colony, celebrated for its scenic beauty, affordability, Celtic mysticism, and
friendly locals, who often modeled for the artists. Penfold was so captivated by the area that he maintained homes in both Pont Aven and Buffalo, New York, throughout his life.
In the U.S., Penfold contributed significantly to the art scene. He helped establish the Municipal Art League in Chicago in 1901 and was active in the Buffalo Society of Artists, serving as its
president in 1896. He exhibited at the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair in Chicago, the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo (where he won Honorable Mention), and the 1904
Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. His work was also shown in solo exhibitions at the Albright Art Gallery (now Albright-Knox Gallery) in Buffalo. - More Information
