Pair of Dark Stained Pine Armchairs, Europe First half of the 20th century

$ 7,553
  • Description
    “Form follows function” is a principle of design associated with early and mid-20th century architecture and furniture, stating that the shape of the building or object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose. This was evidently an important principle for the maker of these chairs, seen in the design of the structure and choice of aesthetic elements.

    ‎The design of this pair of armchairs shows great balance between the different lines and utilisation of the natural beauty of the pinewood. The solid pine structure is a frame for the cushions, both in a literal and figurative way. The removable seat cushions are plush, making the sitting comfort quite pleasant. The light colour of the textured upholstery, in combination with the richly-coloured stained wood, allow for a warm and elegant look, perfect to bring a modern touch to any space. The duality of the two materials also creates a flowing and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for good reason. In Europe, designers were often also architects, whose focus on functionality and quality resulted in sculptural models such as these armchairs. The solid wood frames can be considered the main design element of this model, with the architectural precision visible in every line. The angles formed by the arms and backrests are the most apparent element of the structure, with subtle curvature and geometric elements. The armrests widen slightly to allow the sitter’s arms to rest comfortably, while the backrests provide an open yet sturdy look. The legs are tapered and splayed, further adding to the visual interest of the pair.

    Charismatic furniture from the past that imagined a cool, uncluttered future has become very “now”. This is mainly because of the timeless modern aesthetic that easily complements almost any interior, thanks to the focus on the visual and material quality of the design.
