Set of 4 Osvaldo Borsani p35 arm chairs
-
Description
Four rare p35 Dining chairs originally designed in the late 1940s by Osvaldo Borsani. Most likely built by Techno, this set of chairs was sold through the US distributor M. Singer and Sons from their Chicago showroom in 1956 to the Milwaukee real estate developer Marvin Fishman for his modernist Fox Point WI home. Purchased in this current condition from the Fishman estate in 2010, the original "Ivory Gloveskin" upholstery shows wear as shown in the photos. One of the chairs had the upholstery removed apparently for patterning but was never completed, it will be included with the sale. Aside from the upholstery, the chairs are in very good structural condition.
The original invoices will also be included in the sale.
Examples of the p35 chairs were exhibited at the first retrospective exhibition of Osvaldo Borsani - architect, designer and co-founder of the manufacturing firm Tecno open at Milan’s Triennale Design Museum in May 2018. The show was curated by Norman Foster who had worked with Borsani at Tecno.
Gio Ponti designed furniture for M. Singer and Sons in the 1950s, but also acted as a consultant, introducing Singer to other Italian architects and designers such as Borsani and Ico Parisi whom Singer then represented. Ponti is often mis-attributed to this design, especially due to the fact that Singer and Sons did not include the designers names when promoting and selling the work. -
