Created circa 1900 by the New York society jeweler, Thomas Kirkpatrick, this rivière necklace is composed of approximately 21 carats of diamonds. It is designed as a graduating line of 71 old European-cut diamonds set in platinum-topped 18K gold, the central stone with retractable bail, and completed by a box clasp. A handmade jewel of delicate minimalism, these lively diamonds read like a line of sparkling light along the neck.

Thomas Kirkpatrick, the firm's founder, emigrated from Scotland to New York and worked for a time at Ball, Black & Co., one of the oldest and most prestigious jewelers in New York. By 1870 at the latest, he had set up his own firm at 305 Broadway, in the old jewelry district between Duane and Thomas Streets, and was well-connected within the political establishment. Kirkpatrick counted the Tweeds and the Roosevelts among his clients. The prestigious family firm continued for three generations, surviving into the 1980s.
