Description
This is an original 1960 "Johnson for Vice President" campaign poster. This poster was an iconic part of Kennedy and Johnson’s campaign in 1960. The poster featured a black and white photographic portrait of Lyndon B. Johnson, set against a red, white, and blue background. At top and bottom, the campaign's slogan, "JOHNSON FOR VICE PRESIDENT/ LEADERSHIP FOR THE 60's," is printed in block letters. An offset lithograph, this poster was published by the Democratic National Committee, Washington DC.
At the Democratic convention in 1960, Johnson lost the presidential nomination to John F. Kennedy on the first ballot, 809 votes to 409. He then accepted Kennedy’s invitation to join the Democratic ticket as the vice presidential candidate. Overcoming his disappointment at not heading the ticket himself, he campaigned energetically, and many observers felt that without his presence Kennedy could not have carried Texas, Louisiana, and the Carolinas, states that were essential to his victory over the Republican candidate, Richard M. Nixon. After a very close race and despite his young age, Kennedy was elected as the 35th American President of the United States and Johnson was elected as the 37th Vice President.
