Price Upon Request
  • Description
A PAIR OF STATUARY MARBLE, VERDE ANTICO AND SCAGLIOLA INLAID CANDELABRA WITH FOUR-LIGHT CRYSTAL UPPER SECTIONS

English. Second Half of the Nineteenth Century.

    Measurements
    Candelabra: Height: 49 5/8" (126 cm); Approximate Width: 30" (76 cm); Approximate Depth: 19 1/4" (49 cm). Plinth: Height: 49" (124.5 cm); Width: 16 1/2" (42 cm); Depth: 13 3/4" (24.9 cm).

    Research
Of statuary marble and verde antico marble, scagliola, silvered bronze and cut glass. The stepped verde antico bases support a pylonic form shaft in to which green and red neoclassical ornament is inlaid in scagliola. The cut glass four light upper section with central spire and swag and pediment drapes. The arms and spire with finely worked silvered bronze fittings. Possibly a few old replacements to swags and pendents. Minor chips and discoloration to marble base.

Candelabrum #1: Three nozzles repaired; One cracked nozzle.
Candelabrum #2: Two nozzles repaired; One serpent shaped extension with small amount of end missing; One nozzle not present, to be supplied.

This massive pair of candelabra is unusual not just in terms of scale, but also in the—possibly unprecedented—use of scagliola inlaid into their statuary marble pylonic bases.

It seems certain that the base sections were made by an as-yet-unnamed workshop, which specialized in precisely this kind of green scagliola inlay into a ground of statuary marble. The only other evidence of this distinctive output has until now consisted exclusively of pier tables.
