Fine Quality Set of (8) George I Dining Chairs. English Circa 1715
-
Description
From my own private collection of outstandinq quality antique furniture items is being offered this "Magnificent Set of Eight George I Walnut Chairs" in impeccable original condition and finish; with gold colored silk damask "slip in" seat covers.
Highly desirable reverse modified crinoline cross stretcher connects the two side stretchers. The curved top rail and vertical sides connects to the broad seat frame which houses the slip in seats. Below are front cabriole legs with a bold hand carved knee ending in a delicate and intricate expertly carved proud ball and claw foot with three tendons.
A back stretcher connects the two rear splayed legs.
It is rare to find a single dining chair of this quality but to find an exact set of eight chairs of this age and stature is quite unusual and special.
A "makers mark" is impressed to the rear of the seat frame indicating the initials of the maker "W.F." Additionally, roman numerals one through eight are impressed to each chair (see images), I have done research, but have not identified the talented and early cabinetmaker who crafted and designed these chairs. Being 300 years old makes any meaningful identifiable attribution difficult.
Of note is the fact that a pair of arm chairs were made to go with this set of eight chairs and are identical in every way., even down to the beautifully hand carved curved bottom stretcher. They would complement and make a beautiful set of 10 chairs, albeit they were crafted a century later. I have them listed as item #LU973239419542
