A Fine Simulated Rosewood and Gilt Decorated George III Sheraton Period Settee

$ 27,576
  • Description
    A particularly fine English Thomas Sheraton period simulated rosewood and gilt decorated settee. Circa 1800 England.

    The finely decorated settee is in the most remarkable original condition, including all of the original decoration, gilding, cane work, gilt casters and plausibly squab cushion. This is an exemplary and highly fashionable example in original condition.

    The settee is raised on four outswept ring turned legs to the front and four saber legs to the back, each joined by double concave supports below the undulating crest rail. Caned to the back with three demilune panels incorporating neoclassical scenes of putti in the style of the Swiss neoclassical painter Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) .

    The fine s-scroll arms are particularly pleasing to each side, joining directly to the out swept ring turned legs.

    The bold design is testament to the most prolific designers of the late 18th and early 19th century, such as Thomas Sheraton, Chippendale junior, Hepplewhite and course of Gillows.
