Afra & Tobia Scarpa Bastiano Pair of Lounge Chairs, by Gavina, Italy, 1960
-
Description
A classic and chic pair of club/lounge chairs from the Bastiano series, designed by the iconic Italian designer duo Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Gavina, Italy, circa 1960. The chairs have a solid lacquered walnut frame and are newly upholstered with a velvet cotton fabric. Loose seat and back cushions cover the steel and elastic straps underside supports. Scarpa designed these chairs as a part of the firm's experimental design studio. Based on Le Corbusier's segmented design concept, Scarpa replaced the cold steel design of Le Corbusier's original with a solid wooden base – resulting in a solid and weighty appearance, married with a beautiful warmth.
