The magnificent glasswork of Finnish designer Gunnel Nyman is perfectly exemplified in this pair of mouth-blown table lamps. Rare and important, her works were often made as individual commissions - she was a pioneer of modern Finnish glass design & her work is exhibited in museums across the globe. This exquisite pair of petite lamps includes laminated silk shades with gold metallic trim.
Gunnel Nyman (1909-1948): Trained as a furniture designer, Nyman created lighting designs, most notably for Helsinki's Swedish Theater, which she co-designed with Oy Taito AB metalsmiths. Her work was highly praised and in the post-war years, she shifted her focus to glassware, collaborating with various glassworks including Riihimäki & Iittala. Her designs are known for their organic forms and a strong emphasis on the inherent qualities of glass - she was particularly fascinated by the way glass embodies light and the instantaneous solidification of the molten material. Sadly, we were denied further work when Nyman passed away in 1948 after battling a long illness, and in 1951 she was posthumously awarded a gold medal at the Milan Triennale.
