In Victorian Jewellery by Margaret Flower notes that lockets were the "most popular neckware of the Seventies." Lockets might be suspended from a substantial gold chain, or, for a change of pace, from velvet strap. Jeweled lockets containing images and other sentimental mementos were one of Queen Victoria's favored gifts to her children and grandchildren.
