13-Star Yacht Ensign, O.C.& K.R. Wilson, Ship Chandleries, Early 20th Century

$ 3,750
  • Description
    Presented is a 13-star Yacht Ensign from the early 20th century, dated 1900-1925. The machine-sewn canton has 13 single-appliqued white cotton stars arranged in a medallion, enclosing a white fouled anchor on blue bunting. The design is completed with 13 machine-sewn wool bunting stripes, alternating in red and white. The white canvas hoist has two brass grommets and is stamped “O.C. and K.R. Wilson" and stenciled, "Y.E.8."

    The circular arrangement of stars found on this flag suggests unity and perpetuity, and it was a favorite design style of patriotic painters, currency designers, and flag makers. The original use of the 13-star flag dates to June 14th, 1777, each star representing a state in the newly formed Union. Throughout the 1800 and early 1900s, the U.S. Navy enjoyed the privilege of placing only 13-stars rather than the full complement of the day. As such, the practice was continued by private boat and yacht owners. In 1848, the medallion of 13-stars enclosing a tilted fouled anchor, and 13 stripes became the official signal for U.S. pleasure sailing vessels, as seen in this flag.

    O. C. & K. R. Wilson, Ship Chandlery & Engineers' Supplies, was originally founded as Jarrard & Wilson around 1880, and then subsequently sold to Kendrick R. Wilson and Oliver C. Wilson. It operated out of New Jersey, and later, New York City. The firm sold goods to tugs, barges and ships and various yachts, and was a major distributor of Plymouth Cordage Company rope and Stamford Foundry Company Shipmate ranges.
