Chunky Chair by Christopher Poehlmann
-
Description
Christopher Poehlmann designed and fabricated his first Chunky hair in 1994 from steel. The design was based upon the notion of combining Modernist sensibilities with the cartoons of the Flintstones and the Jetsons for a body of work he titled Relics of a Post-Industrial Cartoon Age for a solo gallery exhibition in Chicago. The Chunky Chair was the big hit from that show, a surprisingly comfortable chair that could be defined as sculpture or design in an era that was still coming to terms with the Design/Art continuum. In 1997, Poehlmann produced the first aluminum version of this chair which he then exhibited at the International Contemporary Furniture air (ICFF) in NYC. Powder finished in orange, the Chunky Chair was well received by the press. Since it's debut in 1994, the Chunky Chair has been published in furniture source books, newspapers and magazines throughout the world. A couple examples are included in the photo section with this listing.
2024 marks the 30th anniversary of this chair. We are still making them to order and happy to custom color to suit your tastes. The latest iteration is shown here with a dark copper/bronze powder finish suitable for outdoors. Special orders in stainless steel or bronze are priced accordingly. -
