French 19th Century Napoleon III Cushion Mirror
-
Description
Dimensions: 56 ⅜” H x 33 ¾” W x 3 ⅝” D
A 19th century French repoussé cushion mirror of the Dutch tradition, punched from a metal plate to high relief for exciting dimension, with mythical sea serpents and dense foliate patterns covering the rectangular form. This narrative mirror in the Napoleon III style features an engaging pediment where two dragon-like creatures flank a basket of flowers and trailing vines. The central rectangular mirror plate projects outward from the frame, enclosed and lifted by a border of four small mirrored panels ornamented with elaborate metal corners in similar foliate motif to the crown. The mirror plates are original, all five exhibit varying degrees of foxing and a thin haze of oxidation. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition and remarkable craft within this cushion mirror.
