French, 19th Century
Panel: Height 37cm, width 68cm
Frame: Height 59cm, width 89cm, depth 8cm
This exquisite 19th century oil painting on panel, created by the French artist Etienne Billet (1821–1888), is a fine example of Orientalist art. Billet is celebrated for his exceptional portraiture and captivating landscapes, and this work in Mayfair Gallery’s collection is a stunning portrayal of his skill.
The scene depicts a peaceful crossing of a waterway by both horse and camel riders. In the river, three large brown camels and a white horse, each bearing riders, are shown wading through the water. In the distance, another noble animal leads the group toward their destination. The distant hills and hazy landscape further emphasize the solitude of the figures, enhancing the sense of isolation. Dominated by a harmonious blend of blue, brown, and green tones, the painting also features bursts of vivid colour. The expansive, radiant blue sky above the riders perfectly complements the reflective waters below, adding a sense of tranquillity and grandeur.
Billet travelled through Egypt and Algeria in the 1850s, and this painting may well represent the banks of the Nile in Egypt.
The work is housed in a beautifully carved giltwood frame and bears Billet’s signature in the lower right corner, reading ‘E. Billet’.
Of exceptional quality and remarkable attention to detail, this Orientalist masterpiece is a very desirable addition to one’s interior.
