Description
The composition in “End of Day” is dominated by a sunset seen through the screen of a large maple tree. This tree is situated just outside the artist’s studio. It is about fifty years old and must have been planted shortly after the house was built on the outskirts of Sydney. The tree is a noninvasive exotic species often used in Australian garden settings. Here we see the deciduous tree in early spring when it is just beginning to re-sprout foliage, but this information is hardly perceptible because of the powerful light coming from directly behind the tree. Due to atmospheric conditions and the location of the sun, Australian skies can get incredibly vibrant color schemes in the sunsets at this time of year.
