French 18th Century Louis XVI Style Gilt & Painted Trumeau
-
Description
A grand French trumeau mirror of the Louis XVI period, dating to the 18th century, with incredible, gilt wood carvings mounted on a pastel green back panel. At the top of the piece, dense foliate carvings like laurel encircle a pair of birds, the blooming vines scroll down to the upper edges of the frame, softening the geometry of the rectangular mirror. To the left and right of the love birds are representations of a burning flambeau and the feathered end of an arrow. The original mirror plate is dusted with a random pattern of foxing, the glass protected by a low, beaded trim. At the lower corners are ornate carvings, which transition into little feet like inverted artichokes to lift and protect the delicate work.
