Armchair with Carved Details and Upholstered Seat, England ca 1920s

$ 2,090
  • Description
    Although the Arts and Crafts movement dominated England between the years 1860 and 1915, its effects were felt around the world, especially in Western Europe and the United States, well into the 1920s.

    Although this charming armchair was crafted in the early 20th century, it embodies the distinctive aesthetic of the Arts & Crafts movement. Featuring meticulously carved wooden details, the frame showcases intricate patterns that reflect the movement's emphasis on handcrafting. The chair’s elegant yet sturdy frame is made of rich, dark wood, with arms that gently curve and support the seated individual. The upholstered seat, designed for comfort, is finished in a warm, earthy fabric that complements the natural wood tones, further emphasizing the organic and utilitarian principles of the Arts & Crafts philosophy. This piece combines practicality with artisanal beauty, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional design. The turned wooden elements interlace throughout the framework and provide a sense of balance and symmetry, making this chair not just a functional piece of furniture but a work of art in its own right. The carved patterns display a delicate fusion of organic and geometric forms. The fluidity of the carvings also create a harmonious contrast with the chair's angular structure, resulting in a design feast that calls for the appreciation of the artisan woodworking.

    Nowadays, turned furniture are mostly made by automated machinery, therefore handcrafted pieces like this chair are increasingly rare and valuable.
