Description
Austrian oil painting of a dream wedding by Zatzka
Austrian, c. 1910
Canvas: Height 54cm, width 79cm
Frame: Height 67cm, width 94cm, depth 6cm
This enchanting oil painting, created around 1910 by Austrian artist Hans Zatzka (1859–1945), showcases his renowned style of blending mythological themes with fantastical depictions of women. Zatzka’s works often evoke the magical realms found in fairy tales, such as those by the Brothers Grimm.
The painting features a young woman in a flowing baby-blue gown, reclining on a chaise lounge covered with a richly patterned rug and a polar bear skin. The surrounding décor, with bold textiles and wallpaper, enhances the dreamlike atmosphere.
The woman, deep in slumber, is surrounded by charming putti representing her wedding dream. One places a wedding ring on her finger, while others hold a bouquet, veil, and flower crown. Two dancing putti and a resting figure add movement, symbolising her perfect day.
Set in an elegant carved giltwood frame, the piece is signed ‘H. Zatzka’ in the lower right, with the reverse inscribed ‘Ed. Keil / Wien. / 1910,” likely referencing a previous owner.
A beautiful example of Austrian art, this painting is a wonderful addition for those drawn to fairy tales and whimsical imagery.
