This charming painting is by Giovanni Sanvitale, an Italian artist born in 1935 who is widely admired for his portraits of rural farm life, particularly focusing on the livestock, including rabbits, cats, ducks, sheep, and horses. He seems to have an innate ability to capture the moods, interests, quirks, and mannerisms of the animals he paints, and this work is no exception. He has clearly studied his subjects carefully, noticing the way they move, explore, and play. In this composition, he has very successfully captured the unique essence of these amusing, furry, and curious creatures.
