French 19th Century Mahogany Empire Desk
-
Description
Fabulous extendible bureau plat, or writing desk from the late 19th century in the French Empire style, made of mahogany among other luxurious materials. Rich, caramel-colored leather covering the main desk surface shows natural patina of darkened areas and some scratching, framed by a border of ornate gold tooling in stylized acanthus. Hidden leaves on the sides use the same leather and gold tooling, extending outward to add plenty of extra space for working and writing. The case offers five drawers: a wide middle drawer with working lock and key, flanked by two pairs of smaller drawers that also have working locks and shared key between each pair. Keys are forged in the same acanthus profile as the tooling on the leather for a subtle, unified look that communicates the refined aesthetic of the period. Each front leg is mounted with a sculptural caryatid bust in gilt bronze to underscore the Neoclassical influences seen in this piece. The squared, tapering legs end at the floor in gilt bronze claw feet. In a drawing room or office, this desk will inspire you every day. Cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax.
