"My Dear Chair" by Sergio Savarese for Dialogica, United States 1980s

$ 2,375
  • Description
    Sergio Savarese (1958-2006) was a furniture designer and co-founder of Dialogica. After finishing his formal education and practicing geology, his career shift brought him to design, with the creation of a footstool. Savarese, along with his wife, Monique, created a portfolio of work and took part in furniture fairs which led to the couple opening their own store chain; Dialogica, one of the first retailers in SoHo to feature contemporary furniture designs.

    Sergio Savarese’s work was known for its lyrical shapes and unique design elements. With soft curves and organic forms, pieces designed by Savarese brought effortless beauty to the world of interior design. The “My Dear Chair” model exemplifies these attributes, through it’s simple, yet impactful look. The chair is sleek, with a classic structure complimented by the soft curvatures of both the backrest and the legs. The simple, yet elegant look provides a sense of visual and physical comfort due to its lack of straight lines and its use of smooth materials. From the soft, earthy toned upholstery which covers the padded seat, to the rich shade of the wood, this piece is reminiscent of nature and of how uncomplicated great design can be. Without unnecessary ornamentation, the main adornment of this piece is found at the top of the backrest. The antler-like elements allow one to presume the designer drew inspiration from nature. Savarese’s pursuit of well thought-out design can be traced to the model’s name. From what can be interpreted as a reference to the cosiness of the chair, or a clever play on words highlighting the unique detailing of the design, ‘My Dear Chair’ reminds us of the importance of paying attention to the smallest of details.

    In 2006, Sergio Savarese tragically passed away in a plane crash, and with him, his unique approach to design. Savarese’s spirit lives on though creations like this chair, which is not just a piece of furniture, but a companion to daily life and a mark of an admirable design ethos.
