Brutalist Slate and Solid Oak Low Table, Spain 1960s
-
Description
The Brutalist movement, known for its use of bold forms and imperfect organic materials, gave rise to balanced, straightforward designs both in architecture and interiors. The skilled craftsmanship behind the construction of Brutalist furniture resulted in beautifully raw statement pieces, celebrating and showcasing the striking features of this movement.
Exemplifying the defining principles of Brutalism, this low table embodies a philosophy centered around the use of unelaborated, rough materials, and a commitment to functionality. The bold square top is made from the fine-grained stone known as slate: a durable material resistant to pressure, shock or bending, with an appealing pattern and textural surface. As a result, the impression is quite elemental and unique, particularly through the stone’s natural rust colour. In comparison, the pedestal displays a beautiful grain of dark oak wood and maintains a raw, unpolished appearance, allowing the tabletop to shine as the visual feature of the piece. Its unique cross-like structure also ensures strong support for the tabletop. The combination of materials and their rough surfaces make this table a stylish example of Brutalism’s versatility. Low tables, similarly to coffee tables, serve as design staples in living spaces for a multitude of reasons: beyond their utilitarian function of providing a surface for drinks and books, these tables anchor a room, creating a focal point around which furniture and conversation revolve.
This low table, with its distinctive design and use of robust materials, is transformed into more than just a functional piece - it becomes a statement, a conversation starter, and a timeless addition that will elevate the aesthetics of any space it occupies.
