Description
Empire period gilt and painted wood three-piece salon suite
French, c. 1820
Sofa: Height 101cm, width 213cm, depth 72cm
Chairs: Height 101cm, width 61cm, depth 56cm
This exquisite three-piece salon suite, crafted during the Empire period, embodies the opulence synonymous with the era. Its striking design is characterized by gilded embellishments and a commanding presence that makes it a true statement piece.
The suite comprises a grand sofa and two armchairs. A creamy painted finish covers most of the surfaces, providing a refined backdrop that highlights the intricate gilded accents.
The top rail of the sofa is adorned with a beautifully carved and gilded palmette motif, framed by delicate foliage. The tubular detail along the front elegantly curves upward at the sides, forming the base of the armrests. Each end is crowned with intricately carved bowls, brimming with floral compositions. Complementary gilded decorations accentuate the front and sides, harmonizing with the overall aesthetic. The sofa rests on sturdy, squashed bun feet, each enriched with gilt laurel leaf motifs.
The armchairs, with their upholstered backs and seats, feature frames crafted from painted and gilded wood. Their top rails echo the palmette motif seen on the sofa, while the outwardly curving armrests are embellished with intricate carved and gilt details. The front legs, tapered and decorated with prominent gilding, are complemented by rear legs that are square in section and flare outward in a sabre shape.
While the seats currently require reupholstering, this is a service we can conveniently handle for you, ensuring the suite is tailored to your preferences.
This magnificent salon suite will add a touch of timeless elegance and historical significance to any setting. -
