$ 32,000
  • Description
    Philip and Kelvin LaVerne large and exquisite "Chin Ying" rectangular coffee table in patinated and acid-etched pewter and bronze with vibrant hand-applied polychrome enamels and gold and copper leaf depicting a chinoiserie scene resting on an architectural bronze base, USA, 1960s. This tabletop's extraordinary figural design is a stunning example which beautifully illustrates women celebrating the rites of spring in the Imperial Palace with its bright original enamel colors in this richly detailed pictorial. This gorgeous coffee table is a fine example of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne's sophisticated and intricate craftsmanship and is very well preserved with hardly any wear considering its age and use. This rectangular model coffee table came in two different sizes and this table is the larger model version.
    Raised signature on tabletop "Philip and Kelvin LaVerne."

    Written in Philip and Kelvin LaVerne showroom catalog "CHIN YING: Charmingly slender, supple ladies celebrate the rites of spring in the Imperial Palace. The rainbow of colors is an outstanding example of enamel cloisonné which bursts forth from a muted background of bronze and pewter. The table top seemingly floats on a simple yet elegant base of bronze."

    Father and son duo Philip (1907—1987) and Kelvin (born 1936) Laverne were widely recognized for their sculptural and historically influenced furniture although their oeuvre also included fine art and sculpture. From the mid-1950s through the 1980s, they utilized the centuries-old bronze casting techniques using low relief sheets in their works including cabinets, coffee and occasional tables among many other objects. They created a distinct blend of function and artistry while incorporating ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Greek archaeological and art historical references. Their uncommon techniques included applying patina and acid etching to mixed metals such as pewter, brass, and bronze. The furniture and sculpture of Philip and Kelvin Laverne is highly sought after today for its one-of-a kind quality and demonstrated mastery of functional decor.
