Description
Atlas and Atlantean Sculptures – Signed
A set of important original plaster sculptures from the late 19th century.
Each of them has the artist's original signature and date at the bottom: Debert, 1874.
It is composed of two male statues (Atlantes) and one female (Atlas). The motif of this representation is based on Greek mythology, with the characteristic posture of raising the arms, simulating that one is supporting the weight of the celestial vault (which is, symbolically, the weight of the World).
Exquisite realistic detailing, presenting a perfect anatomical study of the naked torso and slightly contraposto posture. From the torso down, fading into the wide tunics tied at the waist, each of the characters modulates their human form to transform into the pilaster that rests on the base.
These square-based pilasters feature a classic elevation on a base with a pronounced classical style and a decorative finish with an acanthus leaf.
Female Atlas Measurements: 55 cm (height) x 15 cm (width) x 13 cm (depth)
Atlantean Male Measurements: 57 cm (height) x 20 cm (width) x 14 cm (depth)
