Description
A hand-knotted wool rug from the early 20th century, in excellent condition. This is a rare Gavin Morton piece with a plush pile and quintessential Art & Crafts design. The composition is symmetrical, with stylized wisteria medallions at the corners, on a vast solid green field. A rich coral border and thinner borders abundant in floral elements frame the composition.
British artist Gavin Morton (1867–1954) is perhaps best known for his work as head of the design department for Morton & Co, a Scotland based textile company founded by his uncle Alexander Morton. Over time, Morton & Co aligned itself with the rising Arts and Crafts movement in Great Britain. -
