Adjustable Desk in Beech Produced by Seltz, France 1980s
-
Description
A striking piece of 1980s French design, this desk by Seltz embodies a unique approach to construction and form. Designed with precision and a clear sense of innovation, it plays with balance, functionality, and materiality. The desk merges simplicity with an unexpected structural solution, making it a distinctive piece.
Design
Made entirely from beech, the desk features a sculptural form with a cantilevered top that extends from a solid chest of drawers. The connection between these elements is unconventional: a black-painted wooden sphere sits atop the chest, while another is embedded on the underside of the desktop. This system locks into a discreet metal profile recessed into the wood, allowing the surface to rest in a seemingly precarious yet stable position. The chest itself houses four drawers, each with a diagonal cutout for an integrated handle, enhancing the clean design. One of the drawers is fitted with a sliding tray featuring carved recesses, adding an extra layer of function. It is known that Pierre Chapo designed for Seltz. Whether this desk was designed by Chapo is unknown to us, but it definitely resembles his design style.
The design prioritizes both aesthetics and usability, offering storage without disrupting the desk’s sleek silhouette. The slightly curved top and sculpted base contribute to a dynamic visual presence. This interplay between form and structure showcases the thoughtful craftsmanship behind the piece.
Condition
In good condition with signs of use consistent with age. The wood has developed a warm patina, and minor marks add to its character without compromising functionality. Please note that a minor greyish haze can be spotted on the top under certain light. -
