Description
Antique amethyst and enamel cat-shaped cane
French, Late 19th Century
Height 87cm, width 4.5cm, depth 4.5cm
This remarkable antique cane, dating back to late 19th century France, is a true testament to expert craftsmanship and luxurious materials.
The standout feature of this elegant piece is its captivating handle, meticulously sculpted from rich purple amethyst into the form of a cat’s head. Fine detailing enhances its lifelike quality, while radiant green demantoid garnets are set into the gemstone, creating a striking contrast. Cats have long been associated with independence and curiosity, while amethyst is thought to symbolise love and joy, making this cane not only a decorative treasure but also a piece imbued with deeper meaning.
Connecting the handle to the shaft is an ornate band showcasing the intricate art of guilloché enamelling. This highly skilled technique involves engraving delicate patterns - such as the design seen on the hand - onto the metal using a specialized lathe. The grooves are then filled with finely ground coloured glass, which is fused under high temperatures and polished. The band’s borders, crafted from a warm rose-hued metal, add an extra touch of refinement.
The shaft, fashioned from rich, dark hardwood, boasts a minimalist design that draws the eye toward the ornate handle. A two-tone metal ferrule reinforces the base.
With its exceptional artistry and unique feline motif, this antique cane is a highly sought-after collector’s item. -
