Italian Pair of Empire Style Commodes
-
Description
Made in Italy circa mid 1800s, this monumental pair of commodes are fine examples of the French Empire style, crafted from mahogany featuring ebonized accents. Typical of Empire style, the frieze projects outward over the lower drawers, here offering two shallow drawers that open by more recent brass knobs. Two lower drawers are deep and wide to serve as a dresser for clothing and other textiles. Their wide drawer fronts are illustrated in a slightly darker stain, depicting Neoclassical swags and elliptical shapes. Shield escutcheons are only decorative, no keys are present. Two pilaster columns–rather unique for being carved in a torpedo shape and ebonized–are a wonderful contrast to the illustrative drawer fronts. The bases of the columns transition into thick ebonized feet at the front in “Spanish foot” silhouette suggesting a paw. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this exceptional pair of commodes is ready to use. Please view the detailed images to appreciate this top quality piece.
