Bowl plate, "Farsta", Gustavsberg
-
Description
Bowl plate, glazed in green and turquoise. Signed Kåge Farsta from Gustavsberg studio.
"Farsta" stoneware is recognized as the finest and most exclusive to come out of Swedish craftsmanship.
The series represents the culmination of Wilhelm Kåge's art and expresses the full range of his creativity and craftsmanship. The series dates back to the 1920s, when Kåge began experimenting with a new stoneware technique. He called it "Farsta" after the location of the Gustavsberg factory, Farstalandet.
He continued to work with the series until the 1950s, creating several "Farsta" families with different shapes and glazes. They all have one thing in common: heavy, solid designs and contrasts between glazed and unglazed areas. They also have strong glazes and irregularities. The pieces were cast, not thrown, and unlike other series, Kåge mostly worked and glazed Farsta pieces himself.
They produced only small quantities and sold them to museums and collectors for special occasions.
Today, "Farsta" has the same status. -
