Model '9161' Ceiling Lamp by Paavo Tynell for Taito, Finland Mid-20th Century

$ 35,625
  • Description
    In 1918, Paavo Tynell, “the man who illuminated Finland” co-founded the metalwork and lighting company Taito Oy, the first industrial producer of lighting fixtures in Finland. He worked as the company’s CEO and chief designer until 1953, during which time his creativity brought the world numerous iconic designs. Tynell created lighting models for various public spaces, such as Helsinki’s Parliament House and the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

    A master craftsman himself, Tynell’s elegant brass designs were derivative of a traditional aesthetic with a modern sensibility. During the mid-century period, Paavo Tynell designed various lighting fixtures leading to the establishment of his iconic style. Like this “9161” ceiling lamp highlights, his designs merge together simple and decorative shapes, as well as sculptural and natural elements to create a work of art. This lamp combines all of these design choices to arrive at a stunning product. The ‘9161’ model is both functional and stylish and provides a warm brassy glow. The light emits in all directions thanks to the open, hanging shade and the perforated brass. The floral-like elements added to the shade offer the lamp an organic character, a decorative element is often found in Tynell’s work. The body is held by two brass rods connected to the rounded canopy. Despite its many distinctive elements, the design is united by its material, the beautiful polished brass, Tynell’s preferred material to work with. The brass body shines un-apologetically with its warm golden hue. The lamp's clean lines and harmonious proportions highlight the quality of its construction, and the design prowess of Tynell.

    Finnish designers like Paavo Tynell and manufacturers like Taito pushed the boundaries of what was possible with new materials and manufacturing techniques. His international design influence grew thanks to the Finland House located in New York City and forever marked the world of lighting design through timeless pieces such as this model “9161” lamp.
