Arman “Le violon d’Yves” tapestry
Crafted by Atelier 3 workshop, “Le violon d’Yves” (Yves’ violin) is a tapestry translating Arman’s deconstructed violin into a woven artwork.
French artist Arman (1928-2005) rose to fame for his innovative “accumulations”—sculptures formed by assembling mass-produced objects. These works, often overflowing with violins, musical instruments, or everyday items, challenged traditional notions of art and prompted reflection on consumerism.
Influenced by Dada and Surrealism, Arman joined the New Realism movement in 1960. This movement embraced the ordinary, incorporating everyday objects into art. Arman’s accumulations, with their abundance and chaos, questioned our relationship with mass-produced items and the ever-growing amount of “stuff” we consume.
Beyond accumulations, Arman experimented with “colères,” where he violently smashed violins and arranged the broken pieces. These works explored chance and impermanence in a consumerist society. Arman’s lasting influence continues to inspire artists who grapple with similar themes today. -
